OTA's near finish line

by Mark Daniels

The Packers held their final public practice of their three week, Organized Team Activities on Tuesday. A couple more workouts are set for the rest of the week before the OTA's wrap up and the team will return next Tuesday through Thursday for their mandatory mini-camp. Head Coach Mike McCarthy said after practice the team is trying to get a gauge on the athleticism of each player, drills are tailored to see how they'll fit in the offensive and defensive systems. The time to build the depth chart will come in training camp. "Jobs aren't won in June", he said.

Third round draft pick Richard Rodgers, the Cal tight end was running with the one's on Tuesday. He's proving to be a quick study, making a couple of nice catches and drawing kind words from McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers both. Rodgers covered a lot of topics with reporters at his locker following practice.

A half-dozen players were still bystanders at practice because of injury or recovery. The list included Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Andrew Quarless, Johnathan Franklin, Chris Harper and Jumal Rolle.

After cutting linebacker Victor Ayiewa last week, General Manager Ted Thompson filled the roster spot with undrafted rookie free agent Shaun Lewis, another linebacker out of Oklahoma State.

Lewis was in town last month during the rookie tryout camp. He told me after practice it was agonizing waiting for the phone to ring and Thompson was the only GM to call to offer a contract.
