Fly It With Pride

by Mark Evans

All of us have different memories of different holiday's growing up....and one of my favorite memories from childhood has to do with this week's big holiday - Independence Day.

I grew up in a much different time than the grand majority of my co-workers (a.k.a. I'm the "old guy" at the station who has all the stories) so sometimes this memory gets me a blank stare or two when I talk about it.  It has to do with The American Flag.

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in a very Liberal Madison, Wisconsin.  Madison is referred to by many as "The Berkley of The Midwest" after the left-leaning campus of The University of California.  The difference between the two, however, is that there is still a "Midwest Pride" to Madison - and it showed the WEEK of July 4th.

Everyone....and I mean EVERYONE flew the Stars and Stripes the week of July 4th from their front porch in my neighborhood when I was growing up!  I even remember the older couple across the street PAYING ME $5.00 to put their flag up while they were on vacation so that they wouldn't stand out from everyone else.

Imagine that today??  It's a shame we've become so polarized in politics that someone (and it does happen) can be criticized and called names because they have a audacity to fly the flag of the country in which they live!

Am I proud of all America has been....no.

Do I think we have problems in this country....of course.

That being said, I am a proud American; and I've been to other parts of the world and I'll take what we have here over any other place on earth any day, any time!!

One of the great freedoms we have is the right to disagree, and to have opposite opinions and opposite politics.  But this week I think we can all agree that this is what needs to happen:  Fly your flag with Pride and show the world who we are!!
