Trick or Treat Safety Tips

  • Young children should always go trick-or-treating with an adult
  • Never trick-or-treat alone; have at least two friends
  • Plan and review the trick-or-treating route with parents before beginning; do not stray from your planned route
  • Everybody should wear a highly-visible or reflective costume and carry a flashlight when trick-or-treating at night
  • Use face paint instead of masks, which can obscure a child's vision when crossing the street or walking on uneven ground or pavement
  • Parents should check candy before it is consumed
  • Be very cautious of strangers. Accept treats only in the doorway; never go inside a house
  • Be courteous and say thank you for the treats
  • Don't play near lit jack-o-lanterns
  • Visit only houses where the lights are on
  • Walk, Do not run
  • Walk on sidewalks and driveways
  • Cross the street at the corner or in a crosswalk
  • Be in possession of a cellular phone if possible
  • Wear a watch
  • Carry a flashlight

Halloween Pet Safety

  • Keep candy, especially chocolate, away from your pets; many ingredients in candy can be harmful, even deadly, to pets
  • Dispose of candy wrappers immediately to keep them out of reach of your pets. Candy wrappers can cause intestinal problems in pets if chewed or swallowed
  • Leave your pets at home during trick-or-treat time
  • Keep pets in a separate, quiet room so they do not run out the front door or become scared of the costumes and noise of trick-or-treaters coming to your house
  • Keep lit jack-o'-lanterns and candles away from your pets
  • Do not use noise-makers or fireworks around pets
