Best two day stretch the Brewers have seen in a long time. First a victory on national TV in St. Louis, then Jeff Suppan gets released on an off day? We're like a Jody Gerut retirement away from the hat trick folks!*
I was so pumped about this yesterday I almost blogged twice. Like I put up that Ragu guy video, clicked 'post,' and 20 minutes later JSONLINE broke the news that Soup had been released. It's like I bought stock in Yahoo! in 1995 and sold it months later at the first signs of profit. I just had to wait a little longer. Needless to say when this news came down you could hear a sigh of relief from Brewer nation. When I got home my nap felt more refreshing, my dinner of Captain Crunch tasted better, heck I even enjoyed the hold music when I had to call the cable company! Now don't get me wrong, this move does not make the team discernibly better in the immediate future. Soup's release allowed the Crew to call up Chris Smith from AAA. And honestly if Smith would have been on our roster all year as opposed to Suppan how many games better are we in the standings right now. One, maybe two? This was a PR move through and through, we don't get that 12 million back to spend on free agents, but there is one less player to boo I suppose. Acutally if I'm Doug Melvin not only do I NOT cut him, I might sign him to an extension! Soup was the scapegoat for an awful year, and not that he's gone 200% of the fan's ire can be thrown toward Melvin. And what an ire it is. I just leared the word 'ire.'
So we'll see if this maybe jump starts the team somehow? I actually do feel a little bad about being so happy to see someone get fired. Even in his statement after the move Suppan was nothing but a class guy as he has been during his entire tenure here. But as the old saying goes 'Class will only make people forgive you for so long before they realize that you're stealing money from the organization while compiling an ERA over 7 and losing games like it was your profession.' I read that somewhere I think. At least now Soup has time to work on his intstructional videos!:
Tom Emanski has officially been put on notice! Better protect those AAU national champ trophies while you can. Bonus word: gone.
PS: JSONLINE has a poll up right now asking fans how long they think it will take before Suppan signs elsewhere. While I can't imagine even a team like the Pirates wanting to take a flier on him, I give it like a 7% chance he signs somewhere, and goes like 9-1 in the second half.
*How did Jody Gerut not just retire after he hit for the cycle back in May? Like what can he do to top that? If George Costanza taught me anything it's to get out on a high note! Not to mention since that day I'm pretty sure he's hitting -.150. So if I'm Jody I'm hitting that last double and stepping right next to Chad Moeller in the Brewer's legacy of cyclists.
