Well I think the end of this video pretty much sums up the state of affairs at 1265 Lombardi Avenue these days. Just an unmitigated injury debacle. In fact one might say there is a 'cornucopia' of injuries. Or a 'plethora' even. Or maybe 'copious amounts' is more your style. Or.......there's......lots of 'em. Yeah. Damn I was on a roll there*!
So if you missed it late last night, news came down that Nick Barnett is more than likely done for the season with a wrist injury. No big deal. Just our former pro bowler starting middle linebacker! This is what makes the injury situation borderline unbelieveable. Like Ryan Seacrest dating Julianne Hough unbelieveable. It's not just players, it's some of our best players. So yeah Morgan Burnett, Ryan Grant, and Nick Barnett are out for the season, but Jarrett Bush and Jarius Wynn are the picture of health. Whew! Thank God we dodged that bullet.
I guess if another injury was going to hit a position on our roster linebacker would be the one I'm least concerned about. Of course when there is a very real prospect of Charlie Peprah and Jarrett Bush being our starting strong and free safeties come Sunday ANY position looks to be in a better situation. But we do have some depth at linebacker. Desmond Bishop, who will more than likely take over for Barnett, is arguably a starter anyway. Matthews is a professional haunter of dreams, Chillar when healthy is decent enough, Brad Jones, ZOMBO!, and AJ Hawk can help fill the gaps. By the way how's that non trade of Hawk looking now? Is it possible Ted Thompson saw this coming the entire way? Typical Teddy Ballgame. One step ahead of everyone. So yeah, losing Barnett hurts, no question, but our linebacking core isn't without options. Hell Kevin Greene could probably suit up. In fact I half (read:fully) believe Greene IS Zombo.
So we'll see what happens between now and Sunday, Barnett is said to be getting a 'second opinion,' whatever that means. Unless he's getting his second opinion from me I'd say we're screwed. I always laugh at that anyway, like if the team doctor says you're dunzo aren't you pretty much dunzo? If the second guy's opinion is different and better wouldn't he then be the go to guy? Either way the stance on all of these injuries has been to stand pat and fill gaps with our own guys. At this point though Thompson might have to hit up Craigslist to find a couple of safeties. Or a hot misconnection. Whichever happens first.
* My expanded vocab brought to you by: .com, thesaurus.
PS: Is the resolution to this injury bug as simple as Thompon going to our game options and turning injuries 'off'? Like that is the FIRST thing you do when you start a franchise. Come on Ted! Act like you've been there before.
Double PS: Only other explanation I can come up with for all of this is that this guy toured the locker room:
