I feel ya 3 year old Jon. I feel ya. Like this pretty much sums up the 2010 edition of the Brewers doesn't it? I mean it's literally taken me almost a month to even revisit the year that was and honestly I could have written a season ending recap in mid May if I wanted to. Bottom line is this season was a category 5 train wreck from beginning to end. Sort of like Michael Bay movie in that regard. From Hoffman imploding in April and May, to Fielder never having the impact he had last season, and even to Braun disappearing for June and July. See? There are still some things I can't type. Like if I start printing negative words about Ryan Braun where does it end? Will I start bashing Aaron Rodgers? Claim Uecker isn't the best play by play guy in all of Major League Baseball? Negativity is a slippery slope folks. With that said instead of going over everything that went wrong about the campaign (which could turn into a blog whose length Charles Dickens would be proud of) here are some half baked/radical/semi-reasonable predictions for the off season.
1. Brewers will extend Rickie Weeks and Casey McGehee. Add these two with Braun, Gallardo, and Hart's extension and you've still got a great core.
2. Prince Fielder will remain a Brewer for the 2011 season. Instead of dealing him for a #2 or #3 starter, why not keep him and make one last push? This team should have money to spend on free agent pitching anyway. Suppan's 12 million, Hall's 8, Hoffman's 7, and Davis's 5 all come off the books this summer. I mean seriously add that up. We had a 90 million dollar payroll and (carry the 5......) 32 of that was in 4 player's who had little or no impact during the course of the year. Like to me the only player who did anything positive was Suppan when we sent him to St. Louis where he proceeded to go 1-5. Most production we saw out of him in 4 years. Which leads me to....
3. Sign Cliff Lee this offseason. See how quickly we derailed from semi-normal to pure lunacy? But seriously look at what this dude is doing in the playoffs right now. Koufaxian like stuff. Pay this guy every cent you have. Give him the rights to Miller Park. Make the Italian Sausage his liason. Start a Cliff Lee tax where you up the price of EVERY ticket by 2 or 3 bucks for every home game. I'd gladly pay it. And I'm German/a Sheboyganite. I wait for food to be expired to get it on discount. So if I'll pay it ANYONE will pay it.
4. Bring in Joe Torre to manage this squad. I can dream can't I? Here's an attempt at a rational argument: Torre was a part of the early Milwaukee Braves teams, he knows the area, there would be NO pressure on him here, and why not end his managing career where his playing career began?
See? All we have to do is sign two good players to long term deals, outbid the Yankees for Lee, and convince a 4 time World Champion to manage for peanuts in a small market. Bingo bango there's your championship. In any case even though we had a rough year, here's what makes me feel better:
1. Cincinnati 91-71
2. St. Louis 86-76
3. Milwaukee 77-85
4. Houston 76-86
5. Chicago 75-87
