Well if this doesn't sum up preseason football I don't know what does. You wait for it and wait for it and wait for it and then like 25 seconds into preseason game #1 you remember why it sucks and can't wait for the regular season to start. Kind of like football foreplay actually, best you can do is just close your eyes and hope no one gets hurt.
In any case I'm not sure much can be taken from last night other than the fact that the NFL officials on strike had a GREAT night. Not just from the Packer game but from all games played it sounded like a disaster. And it didn't take them too long in San Diego either. 57 seconds in Nick Perry was flagged for sacking a quarterback. Really? It's not like he was running around like Maximus yelling 'ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!' after he dropped Rivers, he flexed the guns and got back in the huddle. But if Goodell was planning on strong arming Hoculi and the boys I'd say phase 1 of that strategy went about as well as New Coke. I wouldn't find it surprising if Goodell actually took a break from thinking of new ways to screw the Saints today and called his finance department saying 'pay that man his money' John Malkovich style.
Outside of that though I guess the only real setback was the Bishop injury. Bishop seemed to think it wasn't too serious in his post game comments, and players are generally good judges of structural damage so we'll take him for his word and leave it at that! In all seriousness though it didn't look great, anytime you're being carried off the field then carted* off the sideline is probably not the best scenario but we should find out more today.
PS: 'Nice cover Jarret Bush!' said no one ever. Like is he really a top option at corner? I saw UNfavorable comparisons to Bwoah Jue and Ahmad Carrol on Facebook last night. Think about that. People comparing you to Ahmad Carrol. Top 3 worst insult of all time but also kind of true. I think I'd rather have Charles Woodson at safety and a Charles Woodson Fathead at corner that way Bush looked last night.
*Everytime I see a cart take a player off I'm reminded of the ambulance from the early days of Madden football. Just running over people with reckless abandon. Actually the way that 1st quarter went last night it wouldn't have shocked me to see this actually happen.
