Got to love the time period before instant replay! Like seriously if it wasn't for non-replay during this time period the Lambeau Leap probably would never have happened. You had Randy Jordan down by contact Jerry Rice Wild Card '98 style (still bitter), and you had Reggie White basically standing on the sidelines when he lateraled it. Officials: Whatever! Touchdown! Go Pack Go! Go Pack Go!
Anyhow just a quick blog hit to the man who was the Lewis and Clark of jumping into football stands; LeRoy Butler. One of the many reasons why those mid 90's teams were awesome were the characters on them. You had Frankie 'Bag O' Doughnuts' Winters, you had Jurko who talked like he was in the Happy Schnapps combo, you had Robert Brooks cutting rap albums, Leroy Butler dancing after every play, Favre slinging touchdowns and pain killers and Mark Chumura getting busted by Chris Hanson in hot tubs, just a collection of lovable misfits. You have to wonder if Butler would ever get Canton consideration but I think his career was probably cut too short by injury. That shoulder never fully healed and he got slow like overnight. Normally it is a gradual process but I recall Butler coming back for the 2001 season and just being over matched speed wise. Like if you came into work tomorrow and had a 28.8 dial up modem installed on your work computer.
Either way though a hell of a player in his prime and an even better character. Now you can't go anywhere without seeing him at events, but I remember when I was calling games for the Wisconsin Woodchucks in 2006 they had a LeRoy Butler night where he threw out the first pitch and then came to the booth to get interviewed. Starstruck city for this guy. I was like Chris Farley interviewing Paul McCartney. 'Soooo.....ahhhhhh....r.....remember when you won the Super Bowl..............that was awesome.'
PS: Can't have a Lambeau Leap blog without this Robert Brooks gem. You think Butler was mad that Brooks took the leap to the next level? Kind of like how Zuckerberg made Facebook 1,000% better than MySpace and crushed Tom even though Tom was basically the pioneer of social media?
