You know what that looks like? A man who may in fact be a diabolical genius. Or a guy who starred in Magum P.I. One or the other. But amid all the reports that Josh Hamilton* is coming to the Brewers, there was a report yesterday from CBS Sports that Doug Melvin has had 'phone contact' with Zack Greinke recently. Yes please! Now I think we blogged about this when the trade went down but I stand by my stance that there's a chance Zack Greinke went to Melvin and said something to the effect of 'look, we're not competitive but we're not that far off...trade me for some defense, shore up the relief pitching and I'll just sign the contract I would have signed anyway in the offseason.' Then in my head they both laugh diabolically and pet white cats. But honestly from what I heard Greinke loved it here. He loved the small market. He loved the fact that he didn't have to talk to the media. He loved the fact that he never lost at Miller Park. Hell he even loved the Brewer bloggers**. And if we're going to spend money this offseason I'd rather spend it on Greinke then on a 3 year 35 million dollar deal for a guy like Dempster or some other Jeff Suppan style pick. And I think if we spend ANY money it has to be on pitching, not offense. Brewers scored the most runs in the NL last year. Either spend it on a solid front line pitcher or sign like 14 relief pichers and hold a bullpen Hunger Games at spring training.

*As much as I'd love to see 'The Natural' in a Brewers uni I still think he's way outside of our price range and, again, we don't really need more offense. We saw how it worked out when we spent money on offense and not pitching before (see 2009, 2010, Braden Looper, etc.). Not to mention putting a guy with substance abuse in the beer capial of the world can't be a good move no matter how you spin it. You think the Brewers would have a ginger ale party after they win the pennant. For sure not.

PS: Is there a chance Melvin drunk texts Greinke after bar close? Like are we going to see a text from Melvin to Greinke on Texts From Last Night? After a late night bender with Bernie Brewer, Melving wakes up in Bernie's Clubhouse hungover and looks through his text history and sees 'PLEASE CALL ME I NEED TO SMEL...I MEAN SEE YOU XOXO DOUGERS.'
