First of all, let's acknowledge the fact that yesterday wasn't a good win, it was a GREAT win. I mean Detroit was on their last life yesterday. At home, playing a banged up division rival. Everything was set for them to resurrect their season against the Pack and it didn't happen. Now they sit at 4-6 with no continues left and an 'Insert Coin' screen blinking at them until next July. Ndamodiofhdalfdjk Suh can go back to filming Subway commercials with a random assortment of Giants defensive linemen, Matthew Stafford can put his Superman shirt back on and hang out with the Fratelli's, and Jim Schwartz can sit in front of a mirror and practice not looking like he pooped his pants*. Not to mention the Packers pulled this trick with almost every key player out. Like I know people like to compare this season to 2010 but I think this season is WAY more difficult. In terms of sheer numbers our injury total is the same, but in terms of quality it's not even close. Clay Matthews, Greg Jennings, Desmond Bishop, Bryan Bulaga, and Charles Woodson just to name a few. And yet they're STILL getting wins. This would be like replacing Pitt, Clooney and Damon in Ocean's Eleven with Paulie Shore, Paul Walker and Ernest P Worrell and still being a box office smash. Just incredible on every level.
Now on to the subject of every blog, facebook post and tweet yesterday; Mason Crosby. Now full disclosure: we used to do a segment with Mason and I got to know him a little bit. Dude's a stand up guy, does an unbelievable amount of charity work in Green Bay, goes on the Packer fan tours and on and on. Bottom line is he's a guy you root for and watching him yesterday was tough because he just looks lost. It was so tough that I almost called the fake number he gave me three years ago to leave an uplifting message at what is undoubtedly a Chinese buffet at this point. On the up tick I would be able to get some Lo Mein so win, win. But I know the popular theory out there is to cut Mason and bring in Ryan Longwell. Hell it wouldn't shock me if Longwell is sitting in his Packer #8 by his phone at this moment waiting to read Strange Brew (let me live the lie). But is he really the answer? Sure he's kicked in cold weather, knows Lambeau and all of that, but do you really have any more faith in Longwell kicking a 50 yard field goal at Lambeau in January than Crosby? I dunno. From what McCarthy said it sounds like they're sticking with him and I like that move for the time being. Bringing someone in to 'compete' at this point is probably the worst idea. Either keep him or cut him. I like how people think that Mason will all of a sudden be like 'Oh man they brought someone in! Maybe I should start making these field goals derpy derp.' He's trying, he's just not calibrated right now. We're pulling for you Mason! Unless you miss next week. Then we're done professionally.
*I just internet tough guy-ed the absolute CRAP out of the Lions there. How does it feel Lions! How does it feel to be berated with obscure movie references by a guy with no prospects or future! Have fun with your millions of dollars and money vaults! Suckers.
PS: Elaine=Mason, me=denim vest.
