He won the job in a training camp duel with a big legged, Australian, got off to a shaky start professionally but steadily improved to the point of earning a new contract today from the Green Bay Packers.  Punter Tim Masthay was signed to a contract extension by General Manager Ted Thompson with the deal announced this afternoon.  Terms weren't disclosed but it's a safe bet the former University of Kentucky Wildcat will be getting his kicks in Green Bay for a while.   Masthay was signed as a free agent in January of 2010, about the same time Green Bay signed Chris Bryan, an Australian Rules Football player who was giving the NFL a shot.   After battling through the summer, Masthay won the job.  He booted the ball 71 times as a rookie for a 43.9 yard gross average and 37.6 net average, which tied the single season Packer record held by Jon Ryan.  He got even better in year two.  Masthay's gross average climbed to 45.6, giving him a pair of Green Bay records in as many seasons.  The average broke the standard set by Craig Hentrich in 1997.  Masthay's net average also improved to 38.6, giving him sole posession of that record.  Masthay became an effective directional punter as well, utilizing the skill against the likes of Devin Hester in Chicago.
