Mid Term Grades

Posted by Mark Daniels on

While not exactly the mid-point of the 2012 season, the Packers have nine games in with seven to go but with the bye week upon us, the team considers this the halfway point so it's time to deliver my mid-term grades.  We'll go right down the roster numerically so with semester exams turned in, let's proceed:

2-Mason Crosby (D)  10 of 15 on field goals is worst among active kickers. 3-Graham Harrell (C-) Only meaningful snap, he fumbled. 8-Tim Masthay (B+)  Leads league in punts inside 20, 1 of 2 passing with a TD. 11- Jarrett Boykin (C-) 6th receiver hasn't had much of a chance. 12- Aaron Rodgers (B+) Slow start, TD leader with 25 but not at MVP level of last year. 18-Randall Cobb (A) Mr. Everything, leads team in receptions, top 10 in both punt and kickoff returns, taking a huge jump. 20 - Alex Green (C) Only an average back being asked to take on more than he can handle.  21- Charles Woodson (C+) Even before shoulder injury, well off impact pace of last couple of years. 22 - Jerron McMillian (C+) Willing tackler still learning coverage.  24 - Jarrett Bush (C) Still leader of special teams and still liability in coverage. 28 - Sean Richardson (C-) Hamstring kept him out for weeks, big body with special teams potential. 30 - John Kuhn (C+) Steady Eddy the offense missed when hurt.  31- Davon House (C) Shoulder huge setback for expected opening day starter. 32- Cedric Benson (B-) Looked like more than serviceable runner until the foot injury. 34 - Johnny White (INC) Desperate signee with injuries at RB. 37 - Sam Shields (C)  Disappointing play in camp, progressed until the injury.  38 - Tramon Williams (B-) Top cover corner who's given up a few but still solid against # 1 receivers. 42- Morgan Burnett (B) His play has taken a big jump since Woodson went down. 43 - M.D. Jennings (C+)  Had dime safety job for only a while, the plus is for the pick in Seattle. 44 - James Starks (D) Will he ever be healthy, will he ever be productive? 49 - Robert Francois (C) A solid special teamer.  50 - A.J. Hawk (B+)  Maybe his best year as Packer, instead of counting big plays, count mistakes, doesn't make many. 51- D.J.Smith (B-) Thought he filled in capably for Bishop until his season ended.  52 - Clay Matthews (A)  9 sacks, pressure helped everyone else turn D into league leaders, relentless vs the run. 53 - Nick Perry (C-)  Showed only a bull rush early, disappointing as a number one who's season is done. 54- Dezmon Moses (C+) A free agent find who I think can play.  56 - Terrell Manning (D) A mid-round pick who barely made the roster.  57 - Jamari Lattimore (C) Moved inside which helped and a good cover man on special teams. 58 - Frank Zombo (INC) In the PUP house for 8 games, inactive for the 9th. 59 - Brad Jones (C+) Holding his own at ILB.  61- Brett Goode (B) Can you recall his last bad snap? Didn't think so. 62 - Evan Dietrich-Smith (C+)  The most dependable reserve on the O-line.  63 -Jeff Saturday (C) A downgrade from Scott Wells, veteran savvy saves his grade.  64 - Greg Van Roten (C-) An Ivy leaguer the Packers hope doesn't have to play this year. 67 - Don Barclay (C-) Different college but same as Van Roten.  70 - T.J Lang (C+) Versatile and valuable, elbow injury has limited effectiveness. 71 - Josh Sitton (B-) Has been the most consistent performer up front.  74 - Marshall Newhouse (C) After a decade of Clifton, this could have been a disaster, to his credit, it hasn't been.  75 - Bryan Bulaga (C+)  Really struggled in Seattle cut settled down until the hip injury vs Arizona. 76 - Mike Daniels (C+) A high effort rookie who plays bigger than his size.   79 - Ryan Pickett (B-) Biggest reason why run defense has cracked league's top 10.  80 - Donald Driver (D+)  Has become a bit player with a couple of surprising drops.  82 - Ryan Taylor (C+)  One of the corps special teams players.  83 - Tom Crabtree (B-) Five catches, 3 touchdowns.  84 - D.J. Williams (D+) Was really expecting much more from him.  85 - Greg Jennings (INC) Unfair to give him a grade appearing in 2 plus games, offense needs him down the stretch.  87 - Jordy Nelson (B) Hasn't gotten deep like last year but still very underrated target.  88 - Jermichael Finley (D+)  Frustration mounts on and off the field with every game, drop and tweet.  89 - James Jones (B+)  League leader in TD's with spectacular grabs and no drops, his best year by far. 90 - B.J. Raji (B-)  Valuable mucker hopefully past his ankle issue.  93 - Erik Walden (C+) Showing to be better alternative than even a healthy Perry.  96- Mike Neal (C+)  With suspension in rear view mirror, will add juice to pass rush down the stretch.  98 - C.J. Wilson (C+) Quietly assumed starting end job with serviceable results.  99 - Jerel Worthy (C) Gets a higher grade on enthusiasm, lower on production, this splits the difference.

My message to the student body?  Keep grinding, do the homework and the grades should improve.  If the injured get well by December, this team should get an opportunity for extra credit in the playoffs.
