One of the more interesting passages of Chely Wright's new book Like Me concerns her relationship with Brad Paisley, which, as it turns out, ended badly because she could never admit to him that she was gay.
Chely tells People magazine that she and Brad dated from 2000 to 2001, but, says Chely, "Once I realized he was in love with me, I cut him off. It was cruel -- one of my biggest regrets. I wish I could've said, 'I'm gay and that's why I can't be with you.' I will never, ever do that to another person."
In an excerpt from the book printed in the new issue of People, Chely writes of Brad, "There were so many ways in which I did love him, but I was not in love with him....he was starting to talk about forever and how someday he was going to want to marry me...I asked him if we could slow down. This came out of the blue to him because we really didn't seem to have any problems...I have cried a million times about how I hurt him."
Chely also writes in the book, "Brad and I have seen each other in passing on a couple of occasions since then, and we exchanged pleasantries. Perhaps this book and my coming out will help him to understand."
