Week 3; Tough One for North

by Jon Henseler

Well week 3 of our prep football coverage saw one of the more gut wrenching losses I've seen in recent memory. We covered Sheboygan North High and DePere (at North). North came in with a 1-2 record, but their aerial attack on offense was as advertise. Jacob Schmidt is in the top 5, and in some cases, the top 3 in passing statistics in the state. Coming into last Friday he was averaging almost 300 yards a game. Which at the high school level is what we would characterize as 'ridiculous.' Well he only added to it Friday night after throwing for 380 yards against the DePere secondary. Sadly though North just couldn't put the Redbirds away. It was 20-7 North heading into the 4th quarter and I think we even mentioned on the broadcast that we felt like 'DePere is just hanging around waiting to break out of their offense funk.' Well at the start of the 4th quarter that's exactly what happened. Two quick touchdowns and all of a sudden in a game that North had dominated in every imaginable stat, they were losing 21-20. North marched down the field and had a chance to retake the lead when Schmidt hit Weston Nelson over the middle. Nelson was on his way to the endzone but had the ball knocked out of his hands as he was crossing the goal line. DePere recovered and scored another touchdown to make it 28-20 with 46 seconds left. Schmidt still almost led a comeback, nearly hitting Noah Stengal in the back of the endzone with 14 seconds left. Stengal caught almost everything thrown his way (250 yards receiving, 2 TDs) but this one went right through his hands. North ends up losing 28-20 and falling to 1-3 on the year. Schmidt was our player of the game in a losing effort.

South had a rough time too, losing at GB East. Oostburg kept rolling with a win at Pardeeville, Luthern/Kohler/Christian hung with Cedar Grove Belgium for a quarter but ultimately gave up 70 points to the Rockets potent running attack. Howards Grove remained winless, and New Holstein continued their impressive start.
