Big Papi – World Series MVP!

by Cade

Congratulations are in order for the Boston Red Sox, your 2013 World Series Champions!

After suffering a massive drought of championships, Boston has now won three in the last decade.  Take that, Curse of the Bambino!  The only player on all three of the championship teams for the Red Sox is David Ortiz.  More affectionately known as, Big Papi.

Ortiz also took home the hardware for 2013 World Series MVP.  It’s not hard to see why after he hit close to .700 in the series and had a couple of homeruns.

Even as a young player coming up with the Minnesota Twins, I could tell this guy possessed greatness.  I had an opportunity to interview Ortiz on the field of the Metrodome in 1998 during the middle of his first full year with Minnesota.

He was already known as a big power threat even that early on.  I asked him how it felt to be compared to another Twins player with power from the left-side of the plate, Kent Hrbek.  Ortiz, even in his broken English laughed at the question and refused to take the bait on any player comparisons.  He simply said that he just goes up to the plate with a plan, hits the ball hard and hopes for the best.

The best is exactly what he’s given ever since.  Minnesota cut ties with the big man after the 2002 season to save money.  The Red Sox scooped him up and brought him to Beantown.  The rest as they say is history.

With 431 career homeruns and three World Championships during his career, Big Papi is already being mentioned as a Baseball Hall Of Fame candidate.

I for one, certainly wish him the best.
