Well if you're a sports fan of any measure or just turned on Sportscenter for a second yesterday you probably heard something about the comments made by LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling. If you didn't you can hear the audio here through TMZ. To characterize what he said simply as 'racist' doesn't really do it justice. It would be like calling Picasso merely a 'painter.' You need a new word to describe Sterling's way of thinking. Haven't heard a tirade like that since Mel Gibson or Clayton Bigsby .
Which, if you follow the NBA, comes as no surprise to most people. Sterling has been a notorious racist his entire life and the entire time he's owned the Clippers franchise. The thing was that for 97% of the time he's had control of the team they've been beyond abysmal. So when you're not in the national spotlight you don't really have a platform to spew hatred. But the last 2-3 years the Clippers got Chris Paul and drafted Blake Griffin and became an actual, relevant story-line. So more attention means more opportunities to look like a jackass and Sterling succeeded with flying colors. If you follow the NBA or the Clippers this wasn't a matter of 'if' but 'when.'
So now the question becomes what do you do with Sterling? I know people are calling for a 'suspension' but I guess I'm not really clear on how you suspend an owner? There are other stories surfacing that Magic Johnson and his Dodger group are putting together 1 billion dollars to buy the team. Obviously a huge upgrade for the Clippers players, fans, management, etc. Not quite sure how Sterling making 985 million dollars on his original investment punishes him but at least he wouldn't be near the league. All I do know is that I sort of feel for NBA Commish Adam Silver. He's barley been on the job for a lunar cycle and he already has to deal with a racist billionaire owner in a league that is 80% African American. That'll ruin your Sunday 9 times out of 10.
PS: Chuck with the perfect take per usual.
