Can someone explain the Minimates craze?

by Greg Belfrage

Diamond Select Toys has released a number of new offerings in their Minimates toy line!  There are new Minimates available in multiple genre lines, including Star Trek, Marvel Comics and Lost in Space!

Can someone please explain the Minimates craze to me?  Because I think these are among the ugliest toys ever produced in the history of mankind.

I'm the first person to jump on any cool new toy, especially if its from Star Trek.  Diamond Select Toys has produced some excellent Star Trek toys, from ship miniatures to prop replicas.  My original series phaser and communicator (with working lights and sound effects) are among my most prized geek possessions.

Well, you can imagine my excitement when I learned about the Wrath of Kahn Minimates from Diamond Select.  I was almost giddy.  My enthusiasm was bursting.  Then I found photos of the toys. My bubble burst as quickly as it had inflated.

These things are ugly.  The heads look like they were modeled on upside down ice cream pails. Do you know anybody, other than your little brother, who has a head shaped like that?

There's even a bizarre, distorted USS Enterprise Minimate.  I was almost offended at how badly they trashed the sleek, gentle and curving lines of that lovely lady.  But I digress.

As if the ugly features aren't bad enough, Diamond came up with a real brainstorm for their classic Lost in Space Minimates.  They cast them in black and white.  You know, because the original television show was filmed in black in white.  Ugh.  That idea ranks right up there with 'new Coke'.  Is that Dr. Zachary Smith or is it The Grinch?  I can't tell.

I've offered plenty of photos for you to judge the Minimates for yourself.

If you decide you'd like to add the Minimates to your toy collection, you can order them from Diamond Select's website.  Then go get your head examined.
