GREEN BAY, Wis. (WTAQ) - The suspect in a series of flat tire scams to steal from their vehicles has been arrested.
Police in Green Bay and Ashwaubenon arrested 50-year-old John E. Johnson Thursday in the parking lot of Sears at Military Avenue and Mason Street. Officers say Johnson was sleeping in his car around 7:30 a.m. and credited tips from CrimeStoppers with helping to locate him.
Johnson's car has been impounded as investigators continue to look for evidence. He was booked into the Brown County Jail on 2 counts each of misdemeanor theft, misdemeanor disorderly conduct, misdemeanor financial transaction card crimes and felony criminal damage to property likely to cause injury or further property damage, all from Ashwaubenon. More accusations are expected from Green Bay PD.
Wednesday, police say a man was approaching female victims in parking lots, telling them they had flat tires and offering to help fix them. He would ask them to hold a hose to the tire's valve stem while he went into the car to plug in a compressor. Once in the car, the man would steal cash or credit cards from the victims' purses.
Johnson is expected in court Friday to face formal charges.
