Badgers Open on Saturday

MADISON, WI (WHBL) - The Wisconsin football team is in “game week” mode, as it gets ready for Saturday’s season opener in Madison against Northern Iowa. The Badger defense is trying to improve its communication on the field, so it can avoid the big plays that burned Wisconsin in all three of its losses a year ago. Junior linebacker Chris Borland says the on-field communication at this month’s practices has been the best he’s seen in his years in Madison. He says it’s got to carry over to the season. The Badgers gave up seven plays of 20-yards-or-more against Michigan State last fall, including the infamous Hail Mary that won the game for the Spartans in the final seconds. Wisconsin also gave up three plays of over 20 yards against Ohio State, and nine plays totaling 393 yards in the Badgers’ Rose Bowl loss to Oregon. Borland said the Badger defense has to be focused on every play. He said, "There were times last year when certain defenders had a brain lapse, and they gashed us.”
