MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Some businesses in Milwaukee are reportedly offering free beer and service discounts to folks wearing “I voted” stickers.
But those offers are illegal, according to Kevin Kennedy of the state Government Accountability Board. He says businesses are not supposed to provide anything of value in exchange for a vote – and when his office hears about it, they call the affected businesses and tell them to stop.
The Journal Sentinel said at least 3 Milwaukee cafes were offering free beer Tuesday to anyone who votes – and businesses from bicycle repair shops to boutiques were offering discounts on their services.
Kennedy says it’s okay to offer an election-related deal to everyone. That’s what Boston Stores are doing. They’re offering $20 off a $50 purchase to folks with either “I voted” stickers or coupons.
