City Budget Back to Finance

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - The city of Sheboygan’s proposed 2013 budget is back on the table.  The budget, which was defeated last week, was re-introduced during a special meeting of the city council Monday night and was promptly referred to the Finance Committee.  It will come back to the council for final action during a special meeting set for 6:30 Wednesday night.  The current budget proposal contains over $800,000 in revenue from the garbage collection fee and would reduce the city portion of the tax rate by about 8 cents per thousand.  Mayor Terry Van Akkeren wants the fee removed and the revenue made up by reducing the city’s reserve funds.  He says he’ll veto the budget if the fee remains.  The budget needs 9 votes to pass, and last time around received only 8. However, 5 of the aldermen were absent last Monday.  It would take 11 votes to override a veto.  The council must approve the budget by December 10 for tax bills to go out on time.
