MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The worst drought in decades is nowhere near over – in fact, it’s been getting worse in Wisconsin.

The U.S. Drought Monitor said Thursday that 88.5% of the state’s land area has some form of drought conditions.That’s 1.2% more than a week ago.

East central Wisconsin is the only region that’s not in a drought – and that territory has been getting bigger lately. It now stretches from about Adams-Friendship on the west, to Sheboygan and Door County on the east.

It’s been a few weeks since any part of Wisconsin has been in an extreme drought – and the same holds true. Much of northwest and far southern Wisconsin remain in a severe drought.  Otherwise, about 38% of the state’s land area is either in a moderate drought, or is abnormally dry.

Meanwhile, national drought conditions have gotten worse for the second straight week, after improving for about a month. The Drought Monitor said almost 63% of the lower 48 states is in some form of drought, up from 60-percent the week before.
