Council and Mayor at Odds over Insurance Rates

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - The Sheboygan City Council and Mayor Terry Van Akkeren remain at odds over how best to balance the city’s 2013 budget.  During Monday night’s city council meeting, it came down to the city’s health insurance rates.  Van Akkeren said the city’s broker has indicated that the insurance fund reserve could be reduced, and cutting the rate is one option.  Van Akkeren said it could save the city between $600,000 and $900,000 dollars.  But Finance Committee Chair Don Hammond said that may be an option, but that it wasn’t recommended by the city's broker.  Hammond said keeping the rate stable would be good for the employees since it would avoid the need for future rate increases.  The council then voted 13 to 2 to keep the rate where it is - at 731 dollars a month for a single and 1,731 a month for a family for 2013.
