Mayor Calls Again for Reducing Reserves

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (WHBL) - Sheboygan Mayor Terry Van Akkeren continues to maintain that the city is “over-reserved" and, thus, over-taxing property owners.  Van Akkeren has proposed a budget that would cut reserves and eliminate the garbage collection fee.  However, last week the Finance Committee referred its budget to the full city council for a public hearing in November. Van Akkeren, on WHBL’s Sheboygan’s Morning News on Tuesday, said he’s ready to veto the budget when it gets to his desk.  He said no matter what he proposes on ways to save tax money, they seem to find a way to put it in reserves or a different way to spend it.  He said, "I've never once in all the time these discussions have taken place, I've never once heard anyone say maybe we should reduce our tax rate."  (Listen above tor Van Akkeren's complete in-studio interview)
