PRESCOTT, WI (WTAQ) - The western Wisconsin city of Prescott is about to become famous for cooking the world’s largest bratwurst.
A 52-foot, two-inch sausage was grilled up and served at a charity fundraiser during the weekend.
Pat Ptacek, whose family owns the Prescott IGA grocery store, came up with the super-long brat as a unique way of marking the store’s 100th anniversary. He said it began as a meat market, so the world-record brat fit perfectly into the celebration, which was held during the weekend.
The World Record Academy is expected to certify the new record this week.
The Berghoff Restaurant in Chicago now holds the record for the longest brat, set a year ago at 47-feet, 3-inches.
Ptacek’s employees made a few shorter test brats before creating the record sausage. And they needed a bun, so the Pan-O-Gold Baking Company built a special steel pan and cooked the bun in a custom oven before hauling it to Prescott – where over a dozen people were needed to cook and prepare it.
Proceeds were donated to the Have-a-Heart program in River Falls, which provides a respite program for families and youngsters with developmental disabilities.
