For The Amazing Spider-Man fans wondering how long they'd have to wait for an appearance from Mary Jane Watson, the answer is the sequel. According to reports from Variety, The Descendants star Shailene Woodley is a frontrunner to play Spidey's redheaded paramour.
After a bevy of critical praise for her work in the film, Woodley has no doubt been inundated with movie offers. Tackling one of the most iconic comic book heroines would be a flashy career choice for the actress whose ABC Family series, The Secret Life of the American Teenager will end with its upcoming fifth season. Woodley's keeping her work schedule tight, though, having recently finished work on The Spectacular Now, a high school dramedy featuring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Brie Larson and Kyle Chandler.
But Mary Jane isn't the only character casting making the rounds: a new Peter Parker BFF Harry Osborn (played by James Franco in the last Spider-Man reboot) is also on the table. Rumors are circulating that Electro will be the new villain for Spider-Man to tackle after the first film's ending alluded to him with lightning and shadowy figures. Hollywood.com reached out to Woodley's rep for comment, but did not hear back at the time of publication.
Do you think Woodley has what it takes to become the next Mary Jane? Sound off in the comments.
