Small plane skids onto I-94 in Racine County causing traffic delays

by

RACINE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - A small plane skidded onto Interstate 94 in Racine County.

The state DOT said nobody was hurt, but a broadcast report said the plane’s only passenger suffered non life-threatening injuries.

Amazingly, the plane did not hit any vehicles on the freeway. There were backups of up to three miles before a detour was set up.

The crash happened around 6:30 Monday night.

A multi-engine craft from Skydive Midwest of Yorkville apparently had mechanical trouble as it headed to the Sylvania Airport in Yorkville. Authorities said the plane overshot the runway, crossed a frontage road, and landed in the eastbound lanes of I-94 near the Highway 11 exit.

It was raining at the time. A piece of the plane’s landing gear was spotted near the frontage road, and at least some of the 250 gallons of fuel onboard had leaked. The spill was reportedly contained before state DNR crews came out to investigate.

Racine County crews placed sand on the freeway to prevent traffic crashes once the eastbound lanes were re-opened – which happened about 11:20 p.m. Monday.

The FAA says it will take several weeks to investigate the crash.
