SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Close to one hundred volunteers were hosted for a thank you luncheon at The Salvation Army on Sept. 12th. The luncheon honored bell ringers from last Christmas as well as the many volunteers who assisted throughout the year in the shelter, food pantry, free clinic, youth programs, administration and construction. Each year Sheboygan’s Salvation Army attracts more than 1,000 volunteers to help with their mission to provide emergency assistance to the needy of greater Sheboygan.
Mary Piehl, the Army’s Volunteer Coordinator, outlined this year’s Christmas campaign and encouraged volunteers to sign up early in person or online for the numerous Christmas projects. Piehl introduced Rita Gast as the Honorary Christmas Chairperson for 2012. Gast thanked the volunteers for their past service, challenged them to help meet this year’s Christmas goals and shared a humorous story about her granddaughter’s persistence in bell ringing. “We need to come up with new ideas and new volunteers who will help us surpass this year’s total Christmas goal and stay on with us in 2013 for other projects,” Gast stated.
