CHILTON, WI (WHBL) - A Hilbert man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for beating a Manitowoc man to death in March of last year. 35 year old James Loewe was also ordered to spend 20 years under extended supervision when he’s no longer behind bars. 31 year old Robert Saurbier was given the same sentence earlier. Both men pleaded no contest to reckless homicide in the brutal beating of 37 year old Joseph Baer in March of 2011 on a farm in the Calumet County town of Rantoul. Prosecutors said Baer was attacked with a hammer, pipe, chain, and stick. Saurbeir’s girlfriend found the victim’s body after she and the three men partied the night of the killing. Calumet County District Attorney Jerilyn Dietz sought the maximum sentence for Loewe, citing his long criminal record and a lack of remorse. Visiting Judge Dale English of Fond du Lac County handed down the sentence.
