MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WHBL) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Tommy Thompson says opponent Tammy Baldwin is an extremist who wants to raise taxes.

Those two met in the first of three debates leading up to the November 6th election Friday night in Milwaukee.

Thompson called the Democrat Baldwin a, “taxer and a spender.” Baldwin says partisan name-called is, “crazy.”

“She doesn't have a record to run on, so all she can do is try and get the people of the state of Wisconsin not to like me,” said Thompson.

“I have taken on powerful interests on behalf of ordinary citizens,” said Baldwin. “My opponent has taken on powerful special interests as clients.”

One topic highlighted throughout the campaigns has been healthcare, particularly what to do with Medicaid and Medicare.

“We need to continue the reforms in Medicare that we implemented in the Affordable Care Act that has extended the solvency of the program for nearly a decade. We need to do more of that,” said Baldwin.

“I would put Medicare after, and before it goes broke, and allow seniors and all these individuals to be able to continue to be covered by Medicare, but after that be able to be put in the federal health program, the same way that she gets her health insurance right now,” said Thompson.

Those two are campaigning to replace the retiring Herb Kohl in the Senate.

Thompson is a former four-term governor of the state of Wisconsin, while Baldwin has served seven terms in the House of Representatives.
