Convicted burglar denies knowledge of suspect in '08 homicide

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - A man convicted of a tavern burglary in Madison denies that he knows of an accomplice from the break-in who may have killed UW student Brittany Zimmermann in 2008.

22-year-old Darielle Banks tells WKOW-TV that his family and friends have been harassed and, “Enough is enough.”

Records show that DNA from the murder scene matches that from a window at the burglary at Madison’s Blue Moon bar. But police don’t know who the DNA belongs to, and records show it’s not that of Banks and two others convicted in the break-in.

The 21-year-old Zimmermann, a UW medical student from Marshfield, was murdered five years ago this week in broad daylight in her Madison home. Police are still looking for the killer.

Zimmermann’s mother Jean told WKOW this week that she believes Banks and the others are hiding information about an accomplice who likely killed Brittany. She said, “I’m confident they know who did it … It’s beyond me that they would let this go on for five years.”

Banks said there was no accomplice – and he said any one of the bar’s customers or employees could have been responsible for putting their DNA at the burglary location.
