Jennifer Sebena's name added to fallen officers memorial

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - A police organization did an about-face, and decided to include a Wisconsin officer on a national memorial to those killed in the line of duty.

30-year-old Jennifer Sebena of Wauwatosa was originally going to be left off the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C, because her death was classified as domestic violence.

But Governor Scott Walker and the state police officers’ union took exception – and they and others helped persuade the national board to include Sebena.

Jim Palmer of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association cast one of the board’s 15 votes Wednesday morning.

Sebena’s name will join those of 19,000 others on a pair of 300-foot curved marble walls which make up the national memorial.

Sebena’s husband Benjamin has pleaded not guilty by insanity to a homicide charge in the officer’s death.

She was killed last Christmas Eve while resuming patrol after a break during her shift. State Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen was among those urging the national board to include Sebena, and over 16,000 people signed online petitions in support.
