SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The transition is underway at the Sheboygan City Hall following Mike Vandersteen’s election as Sheboygan mayor last week. Vandersteen, who defeated Mayor Terry Van Akkeren by 197 votes, was on Sheboygan’s Morning News on Monday. He said he was to meet with Van Akkeren on Monday afternoon to begin the process. Vandersteen will be sworn in as the new mayor when the council meets to re-organize on Tuesday. He said one of the first things he will be doing is visiting each city department to familiarize himself with their concerns and goals. Vandersteen said he wants to become more involved in economic development, he would like to see the city get rid of its non-attainment designation in air quality, which he says is an impediment to the business community, and he feels the neighborhood associations are helpful and should continue.
