Winter grip on Wisconsin helping ease drought conditions

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The winter that refuses to let go in Wisconsin is also doing a huge favor to the Badger State, by easing its year-long drought.

Conditions are still not the best, as 70 percent of the state’s land area remains abnormally dry or worse. But that’s 8 percent less than last week. And the U.S. Drought Monitor said Thursday that the entire southeast third of Wisconsin is drought free, southeast of a line from Door County to Platteville.

Just over 21 percent of the state remains in a severe drought, including most of northwest Wisconsin. 27 percent is still in a moderate drought. And 22 percent is in the lowest drought category, abnormally dry. That covers a stretch from southwest to northeast, roughly close to a line between Lancaster and Florence.

It’s been raining or snowing almost every day in Wisconsin since late last week. A large system is going through Thursday – and a chance of light snow will linger at least into the weekend.
