MADISON, WI (WSAU) - A record has been broken in Wisconsin government. The new record? 36 years, 7 months and 4 days. That is how long Supreme Court Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson has been on the bench. That passes the previous longest tenure of Orsamus Cole, who was on Wisconsin’s Supreme Court from 1855 until 1892.
The 79-year-old justice has been there since 1976 and became chief justice in 1996. She was re-elected to the Supreme Court to serve 10 more years in 2009. She was also the first woman to serve in Wisconsin’s highest court.
Abrahamson broke Cole’s service record Wednesday.
