Wisconsin antlerless deer tags go on sale this weekend

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - Deer season is around the corner, and the DNR is getting ready to sell their quota of antlerless deer tags.

The sale starts on Saturday, and DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says it's first come first served for deer units in our area. "Deer populations in the north are where we want them to be or actually below where we'd like to see them, so we put a limited number out." Antlerless tags will be sold at the rate of one per person, per day, and will continue until sold out or until the hunting season ends.

Every archery license will include one antlerless tag that is valid in any unit statewide, except those designated as buck only. Gun deer licenses for bucks will also include a special antlerless tag for CWD zones and special farmland hunting areas. "That's specific to units primarily in the southern part of the state, very productive units." Wallenfang says those units are far above goal and need to be thinned out.

Wallenfang says the change in doe tags is an effort to increase overall deer population in the buck only zones. "A lot people are happy with where we are right now with reducing tags. We are trying to grow deer numbers in the North and this will allow us to do that."

Everyone seeking to purchase a doe tag will need to have a valid buck tag already, so Wallenfang recommends getting your tags before Saturday. He's expecting doe tags in the northern units to sell out quickly. Wallenfang says they'll be keeping the number of tags available updated online. "Look for 'permit availability' and you'll find what you need right there."
