Shankland challenges Republicans to debate stalled redistricting proposal

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) - A State Representative from Stevens Point is frustrated by inaction on a reform bill for redistricting, and has issued a challenge.

Assembly Bill 185 proposes changes to Wisconsin’s redistricting process.  It has been buried in committee for nearly four months.  Democrat Katrina Shankland believes the bill deserves action, and has challenged her Republican colleagues to debate the issue. Shankland says she will debate the merits of the bill in any public forum with any of her Legislative opponents.

Shankland supports the bill, which she claims would remove partisan politics from the redistricting process by moving the task to the non-partisan Legislative Reference Bureau. She also believes that would eliminate secrecy and bring much-needed transparency to the process.

Assembly Bill 185 is presently stalled in the Assembly Committee on Government Operations and State Licensing. So far, no one has accepted Shankland’s challenge.
