Ex-Milwaukee Archbishop Dolan wants new Pope to reaffirm marriage sacrament

by

MILWAUKEE (WTAQ) - Former Milwaukee Catholic Archbishop Tim Dolan said today that the next pope must reaffirm the sacrament of marriage.

He also told CNN that the new pontiff must re-commit the church to, “purity, heroic virtue, and sanctity” – especially on the issue of sex abuse.

But if you’re looking for big changes, Dolan says you probably won’t see it. He said the new pope might think about changing its ban on the ordination of women – but Dolan did not believe it would happen.

He said the pontiff would not believe it’s his role to, “tamper with the immutable teachings of the church.”

Pope Benedict XVI officially resigned Thursday, becoming the first pontiff in 600 years to leave office while he’s still alive.

Dolan, who was elevated to cardinal a year ago, is considered a long-shot candidate to replace Benedict.

He headed the 10 county Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese from 2002 to 2009, and he’s currently the Archbishop of New York.

Dolan is among the cardinals who will choose the new pontiff. That’s expected to happen sometime in March.
