Taylor Swift 's Red is officially the best-selling album released in 2012 . According to Nielsen SoundScan, Taylor's effort sold 3.11 million albums in the 2012 calendar year to come in second behind Adele ' s 21 , which was released in 2011. That set sold 4.41 million albums in 2012 alone.

Country music figured well in the official year-end chart, with Carrie Underwood 's Blown Away coming in at #7 with 1.2 million copies sold.   Luke Bryan is at #8 with tailgates & tanlines moving 1.1. million copies. Lionel Richie 's country duets project Tuskegee is #9 with 1.07 million copies sold, and Jason Aldean 's Night Train is #10 selling 1.02 million copies this past year.

In other Taylor Swift chart news, her single, "I Knew You Were Trouble," was the biggest-selling digital single last week , moving 582,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Some 55.74 million digital songs were sold last week, making it the single-largest week for download song sales ever. The record-breaking numbers were spurred by people using the gift cards they got for Christmas.

Taylor's album, Red , is also spending a seventh non-consecutive week at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart .
