Creator George Lucas sold his production company LucasFilm to bosses at Disney last year (12) and executives have been searching for a suitable replacement to take over the epic movie franchise ever since.
Now Del Toro reveals his name was thrown into the mix to helm the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII - but he was forced to decline due to his busy schedule.
He tells IndieWire.com, ""We got one phone call to my agent saying, 'Is Guillermo interested?' And basically I have so much stuff already of my own, and I'm pursuing stuff that I'm generating already.""
Yet the Mexican star insists it was an honour just to be considered: ""It was very flattering (to be asked).""
Del Toro was also forced to walk away from The Hobbit after signing on to direct the Lord of the Rings prequel - due to a scheduling conflict.
