EAGLE RIVER, WI (WSAU) - Several dignitaries and past champions are in Eagle River this weekend for the 50th anniversary of the World Championship Snowmobile Derby.
The event began as an attempt to attract tourists to the area during the winter months and since then, large crowds have been showing up every year. The World Championship final will occur Sunday. Race officials are expecting nearly every past champion to make it to the festivities.
Governor Scott Walker and his wife Tonette are there for some races and to commemorate Snowmobile Safety Week and recognize the Association of Wisconsin Snowmobile Clubs volunteers who have educated more than 200,000 students.
Wisconsin has more than 25,000 miles of trails in Wisconsin maintained by many clubs and their cooperating landowners.
