Report: President Obama briefed about Brookfield spa shooting

BROOKFIELD, WI (WTAQ) - President Obama was getting briefed by the FBI, as police were learning their first details about the murders of three women at a Brookfield spa last October.

The Journal Sentinel has obtained records about the FBI’s involvement – and they said the government wanted to know if the shootings were an act of terrorism.

As it turned out, Radcliffe Haughton was ending an abusive marriage by killing his estranged wife, two other women, and then himself at the Azana Spa in Brookfield.

But on the day of the incident, local agents were in frequent contact with FBI director Robert Mueller – who in turned briefed the president.

The spa shootings occurred just two months after six worshippers were killed at the Sikh Temple in nearby Oak Creek. The FBI led the investigation of those killings. They labeled it domestic terrorism, although they found that Wade Michael Page acted alone in that massacre.

The newly-released records showed that Brookfield Police called the FBI to ask for help with things like crisis management.

At the time, Haughton had not been found – and police feared he may have escaped. That possibility caused a lockdown of the nearby Brookfield Square Mall.

The Journal Sentinel also said officials first assumed that 17 people were shot in the spa – and FBI officials in Washington later assumed that up to 10 people were killed. The actual toll was four dead, including the shooter, and four injured.
