LA CROSSE, Wis. (WSAU) - Whenever we hear about methamphetamine labs found by authorities, they’re usually out in remote, heavily wooded areas. Sometimes they're in portable trucks or trailers, but seldom within close proximity to hundreds or thousands of people.
Two people were arrested Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by their meth lab materials, in a La Crosse motel room. Police were called to the America’s Best Value Inn after an anonymous tip. 36-year-old Laura Rud of La Crosse and 27-year-old Brian Brainerd of Lansing Iowa were arrested.
The police department’s special investigations unit cleared the room of the dangerous chemicals and equipment, which was collected by Federal Drug Enforcement Administration investigators from Chicago.
Police Chief Ronald Tischer told reporters they took extreme caution to remove the dangerous materials, because the situation could have been catastrophic.
