Wis. Natural Resources Board votes to increase 2013 wolf hunting quota

WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin wolf hunters will get to shoot at least 43 more grey wolves this fall than a year ago.

The state Natural Resources Board voted unanimously in Wausau Wednesda in favor of a total quota of 275 animals for the state’s second annual wolf hunt.

That includes 115 granted to Chippewa Indians under their long-held treaty rights. The Chippewa strongly opposes wolf hunts.

They’re expected to keep their quota alive, leaving 160 for other hunters.

That’s more than the 117 wolves shot last fall.

The wolf season begins in mid-October.

It’s supposed to run through the end of February – but last year, hunters reached their quota two months before the season was due to end.
