WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) - Beware of a utility scam that’s been reported in Wisconsin. Wisconsin Public Service Corporation says scammers pretend to be utility employees collecting on delinquent accounts.
Scammers have contacted business and residential customers saying payments have not been received and they could be disconnected immediately if payment isn’t made within an hour or two. The victims were told to purchase prepaid debit cards and call back to make a payment and also to prepare cash for pickup of the payment.
WPS says you should write down everything the caller says, and then call your utility to find out if it’s true. The utility may refer you to the police.
The utility receives its payments online, by check, or by paying cash at designated businesses that are authorized payment centers.
