Decision on Washington School Expected Tonight

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan Area Board of Education will meet in special session Tuesday night to receive a recommendation on the future of the Washington School for Comprehensive Literacy.  Superintendent Joe Sheehan said an advisory committee studied the options for the 100-year old school for six months and determined it isn't cost-effective to renovate the school, however they could not reach agreement on whether the school should be torn down or the district go to referendum on rebuilding.  The board then turned the issue over to Sheehan and his Assistant Superintendents and they will present their recommendation at the meeting which is set for six o'clock Tuesday night in the commons of North High.  It would cost 12 to 16-million dollars to build a new school, while closing it would save the district about a million dollars.  The school on Geele Avenue has 341 students and 57 staff members.
