ANTIGO, WI (WTAQ) - Aquatic birds have been grounded in northern Wisconsin and Minnesota, thanks to frozen lakes and last week’s heavy snows.

The Raptor Education Center in Antigo has rescued 51 loons over the past two weeks.

Center director Marge Gibson tells the Duluth News-Tribune that the loons were generally found to be in decent shape – but some had to cleaned and fed before they could be released in larger lakes to the south where the ice has melted.

In Duluth, the Wildwoods Rehab Center has rescued one loon and over dozen grebes. Those are similar to loons, but they have lobes on their toes.
