MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin Democrats continue to accuse majority Republicans of seizing local control from communities.
The latest examples they cite are new statewide standards for erosion control at commercial building sites.
The Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee added the item to the new state budget last week. Local governments could not adopt stricter rules than what the state DNR spells out.
Assembly Democrat Cory Mason of Racine says the new standards would cater to corporate interests, by having them as low as possible. He also said it would hamper communities from giving incentives to developers to be as environmentally-friendly as possible.
Republicans say cities would save money with the statewide standards – because they would not have to create their own.
