Marquette struggled in the second half, but managed to open the season on a winning note. Davante Gardner scored 25 points for the Golden Eagles, in a 63-56 win over Southern. Marquette was held to just three field goals (3-for-17) in the second half, but a team-record 53 free-throw attempts was enough to get the win. Marquette’s Todd Mayo also added 20 points – head coach Buzz Williams says Mayo’s defensive plays were key in overcoming second half shooting woes.
