Nearly seven months after  George Jones ’ death, the legendary singer's widow unveiled a monument in his honor on Monday near his gravesite in Nashville’s Woodlawn Cemetery.  Nancy Jones also announced the creation of a new scholarship at nearby Middle Tennessee State University.

“George received help from people as he strove to have a country music career,” Nancy Jones recalled, “so I am thrilled we will be able to help young people in [his] name. I know he would have loved this.” She added he would’ve been particularly pleased she chose MTSU, since it has a high percentage of first-generation college students who face financial challenges.

The chair of MTSU’s Recording Industry program also revealed that the department is developing a course on Jones’ life and music.

Friday night, a who’s who of country stars including Brad Paisley , George Strait , Reba , Blake Shelton , Miranda Lambert and Eric Church will pay tribute to Jones at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, at a engagement that was to have been his final concert before his passing in April.
